Summary
Results on the dissolution of unirradiated mixed carbide fuel in nitric acid are reported as function of HNO3 normality and temperature. The reaction is followed by measurement of the increase in total gas pressure, by gas analyses, and by potentiometric or spectrophotometric determinations of the concentration of uranium and plutonium in the solution. Three reaction steps can be identified. At the end of the dissolution (step II) the gas evolution continues; in the subsequent step III the content of carbon dioxide in the gas phase increases, indicating oxidation of organic species in the solution. Absorption spectra of the solution show U(VI) and Pu(IV) to be present. A strong tail, below 550 nm, assignable to organic compounds, is taken into account in multicomponent analysis of uranium and plutonium and their valency states. Treatment of the solution with oxidants removes the interfering band. The U/Pu-ratio stays constant during the dissolution.
