Summary
A method is proposed for sampling and detection of low concentrations of hydrogen chloride in air. Several inorganic and organic adsorbents, usually employed in gas chromatography, have been tested for the sampling method. Silica gel proved to be most suitable. Diffusion tubes are used in order to achieve a separation of gaseous HCl and Cl− in aerosols. After adsorption HCl is desorbed at ∼700° C and separated from water by means of a Perma Pure foil drying device. It is then condensed in a Teflon tube, and converted to 2-chlorocyclohexanol with cyclohexene oxide. Subsequently, a gas-chromatographic separation is carried out, using an electrolytic conductivity detector (HECD). The minimum concentration detectable is 0.035 ppb HCl.
