Abstract
Spiropyrans of the phenanthridine and indoline series containing phenylazo or benzoylgroups as substituents in the chromene ring were synthesized. These substituents facilitate the formation of deeply colored merocyanine forms in polar solvents. The presence of a phenylazo group causes the intense color of the cyclic forms of the spiropyrans.
