When 2-amino-1-alkylbenzoimidazoles react with alkyl chloroacetates and β-chloroethyl benzoates, alkylation is at the N hetero-atom. The resultant salts on treatment with alkalies give 1, 3-substituted 2-iminobenzoimidazolines (2-imino-2, 3-dihydrobenzimidazoles).
