Cochleo-vestibular findings in patients with cervical syndroms or idiopathic scoliosis

Summary

An otological examination was done in 83 orthopedic patients suffering from serious cervical pain or idiopathic scoliosis. This included pure tone audiometry, vestibular testing and a lateral X-ray of the skull base. Vertigo induced by head movements was only found in one patient with a pure cervical syndrom. Two patients had a low frequency sensori-neural hearing loss of 20 dB. Induced vertigo could only be demonstrated in one of five patients with wiplash injuries. Three of seven other patients with induced nystagmus had cranio-cervical dysplasias and in four a scalenus compression syndrome was found. The generally excepted correlation between pure cervical syndromes or idiopathic scoliosis and cochleo-vestibular symptoms could therefore not be confirmed.
