The lymphatic outflow from malignant tumors of the larynx and the cervico-facial region

Summary

In more than 15 malignant tumors especially of the larynx a colloidal suspension of Au198 had been injected into the surroundings of the tumor; the way of removal of Au198 was observed by scintigraphy over a period not longer than 15 days. There was an individual screening of the lymphatic pathways of each tumor. In more than 50% of the cases there was a demonstrable lymph flow; it could not be seen in more extended tumors of the larynx, even if there could no enlarged lymph nodes of the neck be palpated as a cause of obstruction. The lymph was flowing to the same and to both sides of the neck; the bilateral outflow was either similar on both sides or prefered one side. The clinical consequences of this findings are discussed.
