Abstract
Plant cell cultures are an alternative method to produce natural products. Some cultures can be manipulated to yield concentrations of metabolites which exceed the differentiated plant. Cell cultures can also be a source of products with potential pharmacological interest which are not found in differentiated plants. To study biosynthetic processes the metabolically very active cell cultures are especially suitable; biosynthetic intermediates which normally do not accumulate may also show pharmacological activities.
