Fine structure and function of the inner ear synapses
Freeze fracture faces of cochlear and vestibular presynaptic and post-synaptic membranes are demonstrated. The morphology of the membranes is compared with the known data of the synaptic transmission process mediating the information transfer from hair cell to the afferent neuron. For example the described protuberances represent the fusion sites between synaptic vesicles and the presynaptic membrane. Intramembranous particles are interpreted as ion channels, transmitter recepters or transmitter catalyzing enzymes.
