Summary

  1. 1.

Differences in circular Rf values determined either by the present technique or by Rao and Beri's are very little, when determined in collidine solvent.

  2. 2.

The circular Rf values of various amino acids in five different basic and neutral solvents are presented. Of these pyridine-water (75∶25) is found to be the best.

  3. 3.

The influence of temperature on the circular Rf values of some amino acids at four different temperatures has been examined. It appears that better separations of a mixture of amino acids can be achieved at a higher temperature, say 35° C than at a lower temperature, viz., 4° C. But, however, above 35° C the zones of amino acids seem to diffuse.

  4. 4.

The effects of ‚distance factor‘ and the period of equilibration of a chromatogram on the circular Rf values of amino acids have been critically examined with a view to clarify the discrepancies in Rf values of amino acids reported by earlier workers. Even though distance factor influences the Rf values, the other factors do not seem to effect much the Rf values of amino acids under the present study.

  5. 5.

The squares of circular Rf values of certain number of organic and amino acids are found to be nearly equal to their straight Rf values.
