Abstract
The influence of phenobarbital therapy on bilirubin levels of premature children was studied. Newborn prematures were randomly assigned to the treated (n=38) or the control group (n=44). Low doses of phenobarbital were given daily for the first 5 days and bilirubin levels and liver synthesized blood-clotting factors measured in both groups.
High serum bilirubin concentrations were found to be more frequent in the control group. No side effects were observed except an unimportant drowsiness. Blood-clotting factors were not influenced.
Phenobarbital is effectful in treating hyperbilirubinaemia in premature infants. But as there exist no means to predict hyperbilirubinaemia in prematures, phenobarbital has to be applied to all newborns. This seems to be an impediment of an effectful therapy. More knowledge of the effects and side effects seems to be desirable before phenobarbital therapy of hyperbilirubinaemia in premature children can be recommended.
