Summary

Prasiococcus calcarius (Boye Pet.) Vischer is demonstrated to be a widespread Antarctic terrestrial alga. A description and illustrations of its morphological range and reproductive mechanisms are presented. Previous Antarctic records are summarized and together with the new records the alga is seen to be circumpolar and occurring in three climatic zones; sub-Antarctica, the maritime Antarctic and continental Antarctica. It is shown to occupy a range of habitats some of which are illustrated. Most records are from salty or highly calcareous micro-environments with a low water availability. These findings are similar to those of earlier recoveries from Europe.
