Heterozygote testing in cystic fibrosis

Experimental studies with cilia of the mussel Dreissena polymorpha

Abstract

A brief survey of the actual status of attempts to develop heterozygote tests for detection of CF-carriers is given. Experimental results of observation of ciliary motility of the mussel Dreissena are reported in detail. No differences between CF-patients, carriers and control persons could be found. The difficulties of establishing standards for ciliary tests are discussed.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird ein Überblick des derzeitigen Standes der Versuche zur Erkennung von CF-Heterozygoten (Mucoviscidose-Erbträger) gegeben. Über experimentelle Untersuchungen mit der Cilienmotilität der Muschel Dreissena wird berichtet. Es konnten keine Unterschiede bei CF-Patienten, Erbträgern und Kontrollen festgestellt werden. Auf die Schwierigkeiten einer Standardisierung von Cilientests wird hingewiesen.
