Erythrocyte carbonic anhydrases in various diseases of childhood

Abstract

In a large number of pediatric patients total carboanhydrase activity and CA I-1-protein were measured in the erythrocyte. Children with cyanotic heart disease or pulmonary insufficiency had normal values. In a 2 1/2-year-old boy with chronic myeloid leukemia of the juvenile type the pattern corresponded to that of newborns. Children with mongolism had increased carboanhydrase levels. The amount of carboanhydrase within the single erythrocyte was reduced in irondeficiency anemia, but normal in β-thalassemia. Thyroid hormones selectively depress the synthesis of carboanhydrase I.
