Summary
211 fullterm newborns after prae- or perinatal brain damage (birth injury; malformations of the central nervous system; encephalitides; water and electrolyte disturbances; ikterus gravis; severe lung and heart diseases) were investigated applying a special neurological examination for newborns.
-
1.
Abnormal behavioural patterns of the newborns could be summarized to the following syndromes: hyperexcitability-apathy; hypertonia-hypotonia; hemisyndrome; coma-convulsions.
-
2.
Infants with hemisyndromes, convulsions and coma were mainly found in primary central nervous system diseases. Moreover they sometimes were complicated by hyperexcitability and apathy.
-
3.
Infants with hyperexcitability and apathy were mostly found in diseases originating outside the central nervous system. The hyperexcitability syndrome was found in cases of water and electrolyte disturbances, apathy and hypotonia in cases of ikterus gravis, heart and lung diseases.
-
4.
Severe heart and lung diseases in addition sometimes caused brain damage with hemisyndrome, hypertonia, convulsions and coma.
-
5.
Severe prae- and perinatal brain damage sometimes resulted in a typical multisyndrome instead of a single syndrome.
-
6.
The prognostic value of the syndromes will be discussed in the following paper.
