First human case of possible Protothecosis in Spain

Abstract

Prototheca wickerhamii was isolated from the stool of a two month-old infant with diarrhea resistant to treatment. This is the first description from Spain of algae of the genus Prototheca isolated from human clinical specimens. The possible pathogenicity of the Prototheca in this case is discussed.
