Sex hormones of brown algae

Abstract

Female gametes of brown algae (Phaeophyta) lure their male partners into copulation by species-specific messengers. The attractants belong to a class of polyunsaturated open-chain or cyclic hydrocarbons which are biogenetically closely interconnected. Studies on the specificity and sensitivity of chemotaxis in brown algae also give insight into evolution and phylogenesis.
