Pseudarthrosis resulting in complete paraplegia fifteen years after spinal fusion

Summary

Paraplegia immediately following spinal fusion is a known problem. This case demonstrates the importance of long-term follow-up of fusion patients. Prompt attention must be given to any change in neurological status. A careful check must be made for pseudarthrosis and for secondary compression of the spinal cord as possible causes of neurological compromise.

Zusammenrassung

Eine Paraplegie unmittelbar anschließend an eine Wirbelfusion ist ein bekanntes Problem. Der vorliegende Fall zeigtjedoch die Bedeutung der Langzeit-Überwachung von Patienten mit einer Wirbelsäulenversteifung. Neurologischen Befundänderungen muß eine unmittelbare Aufmerksamkeit zugewandt werden. Eine sorgfältige Prüfung muß bei Pseudarthrosen und bei sekundären Kompressionen des Rückenmarkes als mögliche Ursache von neurologischen Schäden erfolgen.
