Summary
In vitro experiments with sympathomimetic agents disclosed the presence of adrenergic receptors in the extraocular muscles of the rhesus monkey. L-isoproterenol was most effective, followed by l-epinephrine; l-norepinephrine was the weakest adrenergic agent. Dichloroisoproterenol and alderline blocked the relaxation, caused by the sympathomimetic agents, whereas phenoxybenzamine and tolazoline did not influence the muscular response evoked by the adrenergic amines. The sympathomimetic receptors of the extraocular muscles of the rhesus monkey therefore are of the β-type. A new hypothesis is proposed to explain the enophthalmus, resp. exophthalmus occurring in the syndrome of Claude Bernard-Horner.
