Summary
A high effective dehydrogenase-system was detected in the microorganism Arthrobacter nicotinovorum.
During the growth of this bacterium on Nicotine-agar a blue colored pigment-mixture (“nicotine blue”) was found; however, the colored mixture was not found on any other growth medium. The isolation and purification of nicotine blue was described. By paper-chromatography this pigment can be divided into 4 components. The first component (I) which was unstable was decomposed during its purification. The second component (II), a magnesium salt of a hydroxy-pyridone-acetic acid, and the fourth component (IV), a tetrahydroxy-bipyridyl-magnesium-complex, seemed to be the end-products of a side-chain of the nicotine metabolism.
