Größenänderungen optisch wahrgenommener Figuren während der Inspektionszeit

Summary

In studies of figural aftereffects, the reduction in size of the test figure, where the inspection- and test figures are of equal size, could not till now be satisfactorily interpreted by any theory of figural aftereffects. This problem stimulated the application of Köhler's model of figural perception to the perception of the I-figure during the inspection time. According to the principle of self-satiation, an enlargement is to be expected. Observations during gamma movement, and at the temporal maximum of geometric-optical illusions, and other observations support this conjecture. Appropriate methods were developed in order to measure the size of the inspection figure during shorter and longer inspection times. The inspection figure appeared enlarged already with very short times (50–500 ms) as well as over longer times (up to 200 s). The enlargement can be deduced not only from Köhler's model. It can also be interpreted in light of the fact that with longer inspection time there is an increase in the oscillating eye movements, and on the basis of lateral interactions on different levels of the visual system.
