Summary

A method for the identification and determination of pyrene and benzo(a)pyrene quinones based on the successive thin-layer chromatographic separation on Al2O3 [with toluene/ether (3∶2)] and silica gel [with benzene/acetone (9∶1)] and fluorescence measurement of the isolated substances. The photochemical reaction of pyrene and benzo(a)pyrene quinones in their ethanolic solutions, by which intensively fluorescent products are formed, was utilized. The sensitivity and selectivity of the estimation is further enhanced by recording fluorescence spectra of these substances at the temperature of the boiling point of liquid nitrogen. The limits of detection for pyrene and benzo(a)pyrene quinones are 0.3 μg/ml and 0.5 μg/ml, respectively. Prague atmosphere contains only trace amounts of benzo(a)pyrene quinones and does not contain detectable amounts of pyrene quinones.
