Abstract

An apparatus for the semiautomatic gravimetric determination of the sum of uranium and plutonium in materials of the carbide fabrication as well as the oxygen/metal ratio in uranium-plutonium mixed oxides is described. The principle underlying the determination of total metals is removal of carbon by heating in an air stream and reduction of the oxides to dioxides in a CO/CO2 atmosphere. For the determination of the oxygen/metal ratio only the latter part of this method is used. The time needed for twelve determinations carried out simultaneously is two man-hours.

Zusammenfassung

Es wird eine Apparatur zur teilautomatischen Durchführung der gravimetrischen Bestimmung der Summe von Uran und Plutonium in Produkten der Carbidfabrikation sowie des Sauerstoff-Metall-Verhältnisses in Uran-Plutonium-Mischoxiden beschrieben. Das Prinzip der Gesamtmetallbestimmung besteht in vollständiger Entfernung des Kohlenstoffs durch Erhitzen in einem Luftstrom und Eeduktion der Oxide zu den Dioxiden in CO/CO2-Atmosphäre. Zur Bestimmung des Metall-Sauerstoff-Verhältnisses dient der zweite Teil dieser Methode. Für 12 gleichzeitig durchgeführte Bestimmungen beträgt die reine Arbeitszeit 2 Mann-Stunden.
