Abstract
The absorption maximum of salicylate methylester, but not of the free acid, is shifted from 304 to 339 nm on the addition of potassium hydroxide to their ethanolic solutions. On this basis, salicylate esters in complex mixtures such as creams and liniments can be determined in the presence of their primary decomposition product, salicylic acid. Differential adsorbance measurements of alkaline and ethanolic test solutions are performed against corresponding standards. Salicylic acid is determined after separation of the esters on columns of DEAE-Cellulose as iron(III) complex specifically.
