Effect of muscular exercise on day-time variations of plasma cortisol and glucose in normal men

Abstract

  1. 1.

Dynamics of plasma cortisol and glucose contents during and after submaximal muscular exercise are studied by sampling at 5 min intervals and compared to the day-time variations observed at rest.

  2. 2.

Muscular exercise performed between 10.00 and 10.20 h on a bicycle ergometer modifies the normal excretion pattern of plasma cortisol. A rise occurs 10 min after the start of exercise and a secretory peak is superimposed to the gradual morning decline observed in resting conditions.

  3. 3.

Glucose concentration shows a transient drop during the exercise, followed by a rise to the initial level 20 min after the end of the muscular activity.

  4. 4.

The temporal relations between plasma cortisol and plasma glucose concentrations suggest that adaptive reactions of the pituitary-adrenocortical axis may contribute to the recovery of the initial glucose level.

Résumé

  1. 1.
