The emotions and the ergotropic and trophotropic systems

Summary

The characteristics of the ergotropic and trophotropic systems are described on the basis of stimulation and lesion experiments. The integration of autonomic and somatic processes is stressed. Muscle tone, hypothalamic and emotional excitability are positively correlated. Willed changes in muscle tone may therefore be used to control emotions.

The trophotropic rebound following strong ergotropic excitation represents a physiological mechanism for effectively terminating emotional excitement. It is difficult, however, to utilize this mechanism in social situations arousing emotions.

Zusammenfassung

Die charakteristischen Qualitäten des ergotrophischen und trophotrophischen Systems werden auf der Grundlage von Reiz- und Läsions-experimenten beschrieben, und die Integration von autonomen und somatischen Prozessen wird betont. Muskeltonus, hypothalamische und emotionale Erregbarkeit sind positiv korreliert. Willkürliche Änderungen des Muskeltonus können deshalb für die Regulierung der Emotionalität gebraucht werden. Der trophotrophische „Rebound“ (Rückschlag), der einer starken ergotrophischen Erregung folgt, stellt einen physiologischen Mechanismus dar, durch den eine Gemütserregung unmittelbar beendet werden kann. Allerdings ist es schwierig, sich dieses Mechanismus zu bedienen, wenn die emotionale Erregung durch soziale Konflikte hervorgerufen wird.
