Summary
The development of the human pupillary sphincter muscle is studied by light and electron microscopy in seven fetuses between the eleventh week and the seventh month of gestation. Optimum fixation procedures do not make demonstration of the marginal sinus (v. Szily) possible. The sphincter muscle develops from neuroepithelial cells of the outer layer of the optic cup near the rim of the optic cup. In these cells melanogenesis is diminished and in the basal parts of these cells a fine fibrillar material is visible in the twelfth week of gestation. In the middle of the fifth month intercellular spaces of the less pigmented cells are widened and a basement membrane-like material is deposited in these spaces. Myoblasts exhibit signs of pigment cells of neuroepithelial origin as well as myofibrils with dense bodies and dense areas. At the end of the seventh month typical cell junctions, such as intermediate junctions, tight junctions, interdigitations and intrusions are visible.
