Summary
The occurrance of vasomotion in the terminal vascular bed of the cat retina has been demonstrated by transvitreal vitalmicroscopy. It was found that in the retina of anesthetized animals this phenomenon is characterized by irregular series of partial contractions and dilatations of metarterioles and precapillary sphincters at intervals varying from 20 seconds to several minutes. There is no synchrony of vasomotion between the neighbouring areas of the vascular bed. The main differences in appearance and intensity of vasomotion between very young animals with primitive vascular architecture and adult animals with well developed terminal vasculature are described and discussed.
