Summary
After removal of the organ of Corti on one side, four sequential efferent compound action potentials were registered from the cochlear nerve of the same side upon click stimulation of the contralateral ear. For an input of 105 dB SPL, there were three early potentials having maximum average latencies of 2.3, 3.1, and 4.7 msec, and average amplitude of 60, 50, and 25 μV respectively.
The intensity levels at which the first two potentials first appeared was 45 dB SPL and 55 dB SPL for the third one. The three potentials did not show any adaptation when the repetition rate of the clicks was changed from 1/5 to 1/sec. With further increases in repetition rate, all three potentials showed significant adaptation.
The fourth potential, a late one, showed an average maximum latency of 32 msec. It had a rather wide basis and possessed an average amplitude of 70 μV for a signal of 105 dB SPL. Adaptation occurred already when the repetition rate was changed from 1/5 to 1/sec. At a repetition rate of 10/1 sec and higher, only the response to the first click could be registered, and adaptation progressed so fast that all later responses disappeared below the noise level. When the pons was gradually resected, all four potentials diminished gradually in amplitude and, at last, disappeared althogher. These responses cannot represent muscles potentials as was demonstrated by administration of Lysthenon in combination with artificial respiration.
The present results appear to indicate that the auditory system of one side exerts a fast-acting effect upon the cochlear nerve of the other side.
Zusanzmenfassung
