Summary
Two experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of niveau of fittingness and preexperimental manipulation of material upon paired-associate learning. As stimulus terms Korean adjectives were used and as response terms German translations of the Korean words. The niveau of fittingness was predetermined with rating scale. Immediately before learning, an experimental group (N=20) underwent an association test with each of the words which were to be learned and the control group (N=20) made description of material quality (Gestaltquality) of the same words. In the first experiment there was besides a neutral group (N=20) and in the second modified experiment subjects reported introspections. The list was presented three times successively with a memory-drum, 4 sec for each pair. Between two successive presentations there was a time of 8 sec in which subjects read two pairs of 2-digits numbers. Recall was tested 1 min later after learning. In this time subjects wrote down numbers as many as possible.
It was found that: 1) between experimental and control groups there was no significant difference, that is, difference of preexperimental manipulation of material had no reliable influence upon recall; 2) the niveau of fittingness produced a significant difference in recall. But there was no evidence that the difference was caused by the effects of m-value, frequency and familiarity; 3) intra list intrusions had almost no bearing on preexperimental associative connections; 4) learning took place mainly on the basis of structuring of material quality. Mediative associations were observed in some cases, but they could not be explained meaningfully with associative hierarchies of the words.
