Summary
High standards of material, design and production are required for alloarthroplastic hip prostheses. Specific problems rise from friction and wear with regard to the fail-proof function and expectation of life. To obtain further information on the complex behaviour of artificial hip joints with close approximation to the human gait a new simulator was designed and built. Selection of a great variety of gait characteristics can readily be accomplished with the new system, which essentially comprises an electronic control device, a hydraulic converter including power supply, the cinetic testing jig and the measuring unit. The specimens are tested in a aqueous immersion of speudo-synovial-liquid or in bovine serum. Time reduction factors up to approx. 15 times normal walking speed can be obtained.
