Summary
Electronmikroscopic examinations of the joint capsule and of a free body have been carried out in a case of chondromatosis. In addition it is reported on enzymatic findings, which allow conclusions on the energetic metabolism in the synovial tissue, in the synovial fluid, in the cartilage, and in the free body.
The morphologic development of the disease was followed up by observing the various states of differentation in the cell- and tissue formations.
The electronic microscopic and biochemical findings are confronted with those founds in arthrosis of the joint. The interesting question was to find out how chondromatosis as a primary disease of the inner cell layer of the synovia affects the joint in total.
The pathogenesis of the disease is closely related to the problem of chondrogenesis and osteogenesis, for the states of differentation in the cells and in the tissues of the joint capsule altered by chondromatosis and of the free body show analogies to the joint cartilage.
