Study of the 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase in vitro

II. Influence of neonatal thymectomy in mice

Summary

Some aspects of the corticosterone metabolism of neonatally thymectomized mice of various ages were compared with those of sham-operated littermates.

No difference was found in relative adrenal weight or unconjugated plasma levels. However, 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase activity in spleen and kidney homogenate was slightly but significantly increased after neonatal thymectomy. The difference is more marked in C3H×C57 Black cross-bred mice, which are more susceptible to wasting disease, than in NMRI mice.
