Summary
Vitalmicroscopic observations are carried out on 1 to 20 days old kittens to demonstrate the morphogenesis of the retinal vascularisation. During the first postnatal days the main vessels of the cloverleaf shaped vascular areas are dilated and tortuous. There is a high density of vascular structure which increases from the optic nerve head towards the retinal periphery. The developing vascular structure proceeds by forming a primitive capillary network at the outer border of each vascular complex. There is no evidence that the retinal capillaries originate from veins as postulated previously. On the contrary the development startes at the ends of capillary loops which are localised at the border of the main vascular complexes. The role of the early differentiation which accompanies the capillary budding is discussed in view of the final formation of the retinal vascular structure. Furthermore it is shown by vitalmicroscopy that the development of a capillary free zone around the arteries is the result of a reduction of capillary loops during the differentiation.
