Summary

The effect of hypoxia on the p h of the arterial blood, the venous brain blood and the cerebrospinal fluid has been investigated. In normal dogs the p h of all three fluids is shifted towards the alkaline side evidently on account of the loss of carbonic acid during the hypernoea. In completely deafferented dogs the p h of the arterial blood is shifted towards the acid, the p h of the CSF towards the alkaline side. Whereas in air breathing dogs no relation can be established between the p h of the blood in the brain sinus and that of the CSF, during hypoxia the blood nearly always is decidedly more acid than the CSF. The observed phenomena may be explained by hypoxic formation of acids combined with an increase of blood circulation through the brain.
