Summary
The course of postoperative sciatic nerve lesions is presented and discussed on the basis of 12 cases. Sciatic nerve injuries frequently manifest themselves as a paralysis of the peroneal nerve. Most patients showed the first signs of the lesion immediately on awakening from anaesthesia, whether it was in the form of sensory or motor deficits, and all patients did so within 18 hrs. If only flaccid paralysis was present, without pain, the prognosis for complete restitution is poor. Sensory recovery requires more time than motor recovery. There is no correlation between sensory dysaesthesia and the extent of the lesion. 10 of the 12 patients made a good or fair recovery.
