Intraocular application of tissue adhesive (Histoacryl®) in retinal detachment surgery

A clinicopathologic report of two cases

Summary

An open-sky vitrectomy was performed on two eyes with giant tears of the retina caused by a perforating injury, and the retina was glued to the choroid using the tissue adhesive Histoacryl®. Both eyes had to be enucleated due to a secondary glaucoma. Macroscopic and microscopic examination showed tissue adhesive still visible after 2 years, 2 months and 2 years, 7 months, respectively. Apart from a relatively mild resorptive reaction, the adhesive had no obvious toxic effect.
