Summary
The slow fluctuations of the spontaneous activity of the isolated taenia coli of the guinea-pig (minute-rhythm) were investigated under normal conditions and after prolonged exposure to substrate free solution. The electrical activity was recorded extracellularly simultaneously with tension. The minute-rhythm is superimposed on the high frequency discharge of action potentials whose frequency and amplitude change periodically. It is most clearly seen in the regular fluctuations in tension. The normal duration of a period varies from 1 to 3 min in different preparations.
In substrate free solution the minute-rhythm continues with little change in frequency. At first the amplitude of the tension remains normal (phase 1), then it decreases (phase 2) until, finally, the regular activity stops (phase 3). During this phase bursts of activity appear separated by inactive intervals of increasing duration. Each burst of activity consists of a sequence of waves which occur with the basic minute rhythm. The basic oscillations of the minute rhythym can also be detected as subthreshold potential changes during the silent period. The experimental results indicate that a basic rhythmical process, with periods of 1–3 min, is always present in taenia coli.
