Circadian rhythms

Before and after removal of both eyes for bilateral retinoblastoma

  • Published:

Summary

The blinded mouse deprived of its eyes by surgery or genetics shows a small yet statistically highly significant period alteration of several circadian rhythms. Such a circadian desynchronization is not found in a child studied (before and) after removal of both eyes for bilateral retinoblastoma. A major role in the synchronization of human rhythms in such a case and others is played by socioecologic factors acting by means not mediated by the eyes (presumably other than the effects of alternating light and darkness).
