Summary
The diameter-pressure-relationship of the intact carotid sinus-region was studied in anesthetized cats using X-ray angiography. The following results were obtained:
-
1.
The pulsatile changes in diameter of the intact arteries are on the average 15%, this is larger than has been reported from exposed arteries of the same region.
-
2.
The diameter-pressure-curve has a constant slope between 60 and 140 mm Hg, the slope becoming smaller beyond 140 mm Hg. No sigmoidal relationship between both parameters has been found in the pressure range investigated.
-
3.
Noradrenalin-infusions (10–20 γ/min) cause a relative decrease in arterial capacity by 20 to 30%. The distensibility, expressed as ΔD/ΔP, increases slightly under these conditions.
-
4.
There is no difference in distensibility between the intact carotid sinus and the intact external carotid artery.
-
5.
The calculated modulus of elasticity is on the average 8×106 dyn × cm−2 at an arterial pressure of 100 mm Hg which agrees reasonably well with that of isolated an exposed arteries of the same region.
The data suggest that it is hazardous to extrapolate from data on isolated or exposed arteries to intact arteries. Manipulation of arteries seems to cause a constriction and a reduction of distensibility.
