Summary
-
1.
The rhythmic growth of the “clock”-mutant zonata of Podospora anserina causes a periodical and repeated sequence of rapid, slow and subsequent ceasing of dry weight production, when the strain is cultivated in unstirred liquid culture after mass inoculation.
-
2.
The hyphae grown during the various steps of this cycle exhibit the same morphological alterations known from the colonies of this strain on solid media.
-
3.
The same kinetics of dry weight production is found in cultures of two other “clock”-mutants, Circulosa and undulata.
-
4.
The wild strain does not show this periodically altering rate of dry weight increase nor does the shape of its growing hyphae alter significantly.
-
5.
As demonstrated by various tests, the periodic dry weight increase of the “clock”-mutants is not due to a diauxie.
-
6.
The importance of the rhythmic growth in liquid culture for the further investigation of these strains as well as of their rhythms is discussed.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
