Summary
-
1.
The influence of filtered red and blue light on the utilization of stored carbohydrates or of added glucose was investigated in Chlorella (211-8b) while photosynthetic production was eliminated by 10-5 mol DCMU.
-
2.
Stored carbohydrates give rise to nitrogen compounds (protein) in the dark and much more in blue light. These syntheses are absent in red light.
-
3.
Respiration from stored carbohydrates is increased by blue, and decreased by red light compared with dark respiration. Addition of glucose increases this effect of blue, and diminishes the effect of red light.
-
4.
Storage of carbohydrates from added glucose is enhanced by red, and reduced by blue light.
-
5.
Different fractions of carbohydrates decrease equally in blue light. In red light, however, one single fraction containing lower polymers is accumulated
-
6.
The spectral effects observed are light-saturated at about 103 erg · cm-2 · sec-1.
-
7.
The influences of blue and red light on protein synthesis and respiration are secondary ones; more direct effects, in particular a change in the permeability of the plastid membrane, are discussed.
Zusammenfassung
-
1.
