Summary
The influence of intravenously infused adrenaline and noradrenaline on intraocular pressure was studied in the rat by means of impression tonometry. Initially, a rise in intraocular pressure, related to the hypertensive effect of the catecholamines was observed. Subsequently, intraocular pressure continuously increased, although no further rise in blood pressure occured. Similar observations were described by Wessely (1908). Isotonic determinations have demonstrated that contraction of orbital smooth muscle cannot be the cause of the continuous rise of intraocular pressure. The latter phenomenon cannot be explained by our actual knowledge of the dynamics of aqueous humour movements.
