Summary
The probe of the Mackay-Marg Tonometer (MMT) was mounted on the chin-rest and a transparent pressure-chamber on the light-arm of the slitlamp in such a manner that, observed through the pressure chamber, any size of applanation could be exactly adjusted. To each of the chosen applanation the response of the MMT was registered. The examinations were performed in open and closed stopcock of the chamber on a thin rubber-membrane and on the cornea of enucleated human eyes.
On the rubber membrane the MMT indicated properly the pressure of the chamber as soon as the contact area covered the plunger and the innerst zone of the footplate. On the cornea however first definitely higher values were indicated by the MMT in small applanations and the true level of the pressure not before the size of applanation increased to that of the whole footplate. Finally due to the studies performed the trough of the tonogram is correlated to a corneal applanation the diameter of which is equal to the diameter of the footplate.
