Summary
This investigation explains the refraction and reflection of ultrasound from the anterior portion of the sclera. The physical basis of the experimental observations is explained mathematically. Porcine eyes were used in the investigation. The frequency of the unfocused transducer was 7.5 Mc and its diameter 2 mm. When the sound beam had met the sclera at various points several cross sections of the sound fields were examined, a small steel ball acting as reflector.
About 2–3 mm from the limbus towards the equator, a point in the sclera was found where it was not possible to record the sound beam with the aid of the ball's movements. Either the sound beam was completely reflected from the outer surface of the sclera at this point or it did not reach the inner surface. Near this point in the sclera and near the equator we found a point beyond which it was possible to record echoes distinctly higher than the control observations recorded in water. Both experimental and mathematical results indicate that when the sound beam strikes the sclera in a certain direction it can act as an acoustic collectorlens.
