Summary
The external carotid artery is of special importance for the compensatory blood supply of the orbital contents and of the brain. This well known fact could be confirmed by ophthalmodynamometric, ophthalmodynamographic and angiographic findings in patients with thromboses of the internal carotid arteries or with temporal arteritis.
The ligation or compression of the external carotid artery — carried out in patients with carcinomatous changes of the oral cavity and its regional lymph glands — exerted a distinct influence on the ophthalmodynamogram: before all the pulsation volume decreased.
Therefore the ophthalmodynamogram — an integral oscillogram trace of the pulsations of the whole arterial system of the orbit — does not afford reliable information about the cerebrovascular resistance.
