Summary
The gradations in nuclear size of the ganglion cells in the Stratum ganglionare nervi optici and the Stratum ganglionare retinae during the 35th to the 60th day of intrauterine life and the 1st to the 120th day of life were karyometrically ascertained and the statistical variations were compared. It is shown that the ganglion cell nuclei of the Stratum ganglionare nervi optici attain their greatest volume by the 55th day of intrauterine life, and from then onwards into the postpartum period almost continually decrease in size. The ganglion cell nuclei of the Stratum ganglionare retinae on the other hand attain their greatest volume by the 35th day of intrauterine life, and this remains almost constant from the 55th day of intrauterine life until the 120th day of life. In both layers the average size of the embryonal nuclei is greater than during the first few months of life. The perception of light irritation therefore exerts no influence on the size of the ganglion cell nuclei.
