Fünf normale menschliche Lungen wurden mit statistisch überprüfbaren Methoden systematisch auf die Dimensionen der Alveolen und Kapillaren hin untersucht. Eine Dampffixationsmethode erlaubte ihre Zubereitung in einem kontrollierbaren und standardisierten Blähungsgrad.

Es fand sich eine konstante Zahl von Bauelementen: Im Mittel 296 Millionen Alveolen und 277 Milliarden Kapillarsegmente. Diese Zahlen scheinen von Lungengröße und Alter unabhängig zu sein.

Alveolar- und Kapillaroberflächen der Erwachsenen bestimmten sich zu 70–80 m2. Die beiden Maße konnten als Funktion der Lungengröße mathematisch beschrieben werden. Das anatomische Kapillarvolumen der Lunge bewegte sich zwischen 100 und 200 ml und war von Lungengröße und Blutfüllungsgrad abhängig.
