Zusammenfassung
-
1.
-
a)
-
a)
Summary
-
1.
The periodic changes of respiratory activity in synchronous populations of Chlorella (strain Göttingen 211-8b) are not directly dependent on the light-and-dark cycle (16 hrs light to 8 hrs dark under our standard conditions).
-
a)
If the life cycle is prolonged from about 24 hrs to about 48 hrs, the major maximum of endogenous respiration does not occur unless cell division is definitely induced and started.
-
b)
Phase shifts of cell development in relation to the light-and-dark cycle are accompanied by corresponding shifts of the respiratory rhythm.
-
2.
The observed changes of respiratory activity can not be explained by the assumption of changes in the amount of available substrate.
-
a)
There is no general correlation between the initial respiratory rate and the subsequent course of oxygen uptake.
-
b)
The respiratory rates are not directly dependent on the duration of the light period preceding the measurement. High respiration rates are not observed during the normal dark period of the cycle unless a conspicuous portion of the cells has begun dividing.
-
c)
Autospores show the same steep decline of endogenous respiration to about 50% of its maximal value regardless of whether or not the cells are given the normal dark period of the cycle.
-
3.
It is concluded that the respiratory activity of synchronous Chlorella cells is mostly correlated with their development, especially during the later stages of the life-cycle.
