Summary
In a series of 25 rabbits the temperature of the anterior chamber and of the vitreous was measured after continuous and impulse ultrasound of an intensity of 1 watt/cm2. A significantly statistical rise of the aqueous after continuous ultrasound was found, whereas an equivalent impulse ultrasound employement did not evoque changes of temperature. The temperature of the vitreous did not appreciably change following any kind of ultrasonic management. The histologic examination of the anterior segment of the eyes treated by ultrasound showed changes of the corneal stroma and epithelium and a hyperemia of the vessels of the iris and ciliary body. The intensity of the histologic changes was greater after impulse than after continuous ultrasound employement.
For the application of ultrasound in ophthalmology, there emerge the following results from our experiments:
-
1.
The diagnostic examination of the eye by ultrasound cannot cause any changes of the temperature of the eye's inner parts.
-
2.
For the therapy of the eye the impulse treatment seems to be of advantage as due to it's greater biologic activity, it allows the lowering of the effective intensity.
