Zusammenfassung
-
1.
Summary
-
1.
A fungus was isolated from the roots of young sugar beets and investigated by the slide-culture method in the roots of young seedlings, which had been grown by sterile technique.
-
2.
Cultures were prepared by isolating single spore clusters to separate the fungus from other parasites.
-
3.
The process of infection, individual phases of development and cytology of the fungus were studied and the nuclear division was described in detail.
-
4.
Single-sporangium cultures revealed, that no genotypic sexual dimorphism took place during formation of spore clusters.
-
5.
Investigations as to host specificity demonstrated a high degree of specialization on Chenopodiaceae.
-
6.
Infected beets were obviously dwarfed and significantly lighter in weight in comparison to healthy plants.
-
7.
Studies with the electron and light microscope showed, that the flagella of the zoospores have no tinsels and that the large flagellum ended with a whip. There is no basal granule at the origin of the flagellum in the zoospore.
-
8.
The investigated fungus differs by several characteristics from the only so far known species “Polymyxa graminis Ledingham” and was described as a new species “Polymyxa betae n. sp.”.
